Metal Sculpture Residency
Location
Bethany, CT
Date
Fall 2023
Critics
Tei Carpenter and Adam Hopfner
Located at the northeast corner of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT, this project explores curves as both spatial and programmatic elements. Inspired by Josef Albers’ Tents and Noguchi’s Sunken Garden, fragmented lines sculpt both ground and form. Four lofted studios overlook a library and workspace, with circulation weaving between private and public zones, fostering interaction. A public restroom acts as a threshold, offering glimpses into the craft of metalworking. The structure’s double-layer system and clerestory lighting enhance light and shadow, merging sculptural massing with radical slopes to create both a functional space and a work of art.
